Shalwar Qameez
The traditional dress of Gilgit-Baltistan reflects the region’s rich cultural heritage, diverse ethnic traditions, and adaptation to its mountainous climate. The Shalwar Qameez is the most widely worn attire by both men and women, valued for its comfort, elegance, and practicality.
Men traditionally wear a loose-fitting shalwar paired with a long qameez, often complemented by a warm woolen waistcoat or coat during colder months. The distinctive woolen cap, commonly known as the Khoi or traditional cap, is an iconic symbol of the region’s identity.
Women’s traditional attire consists of a gracefully embroidered shalwar qameez, often adorned with vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and handcrafted embellishments. The outfit is typically accompanied by a matching shawl or headscarf, while special occasions feature traditional jewelry and decorative accessories that reflect the unique customs of different valleys.
Although modern fashion has become increasingly popular, the traditional shalwar qameez remains an integral part of daily life, cultural festivals, religious celebrations, weddings, and official ceremonies, preserving the timeless identity and cultural pride of Gilgit-Baltistan.
